Fiji saves something for the evening.
A lovo pit opened at dusk, meke danced barefoot on sand, fire spun close enough to feel on your face. The dinner cruises push off from Denarau around five; the village shows down the Coral Coast run later and louder.
Twenty minutes inland, everything changes.
Thermal mud at Sabeto that you are meant to wear, orchids the Sleeping Giant range keeps in its lap, a Hindu temple painted like a festival at the end of the main road. Nadi’s own morning is far better than its airport reputation.
The Coral Coast takes its time.
Sand dunes piled up where the Sigatoka river meets the sea, a limestone cave the Naihehe people once hid inside, pottery villages that still fire their work in the ground. Two hours from Nadi and a different country.
You arrive as a guest, not a ticket.
Sevusevu first: a bundle of kava root handed to the chief, a few words said properly, and then you are in. What follows is lunch cooked in the ground, a meke on the mat, and children who will beat you at rugby on a field of packed sand. The good operators visit one village well rather than five badly.
Fiji works in stretches, not stops.
Denarau for the boats. Sabeto for the mud. Sigatoka for the dunes and the river. Suva for the museum and the rain that comes with it. Choose the stretch first, then choose the day.

How the first three days go.
Most flights land at Nadi before breakfast and most people lose that first day to it. This is the order that puts the boat on the clearest morning and keeps the driving short.
